In Australia, some people have found new PS5 models sold in stores. But don’t get too excited. These new console revisions don’t add bigger hard drives or more powerful hardware. Instead, these new revisions seem to make only a few minor changes, including replacing a single screw.

As reported by an Australia-based game store press start, these new PS5 models were shipped to the country last week. Apparently, press start believes Australia is the first country to receive shipments of the new models. These new consoles feature a slightly modified model numbering scheme, with CFI-11XX. (The original launch PS5 consoles use CFI-1XXX.) These console models appear to be nearly identical. A small change is a new screw used to secure the PS5 to its mount. Previously, this screw could only be tightened or loosened with a tool. Now the little screw has been changed and you can do everything by hand. What a time to live.

In fact, I totally understand this small change. Installation the support of my PS5 was a puzzle, between its strange shape and the difficult screw to screw. Maybe this new improved screw will be a small improvement in the quality of life.

It also appears that these new models, available in both digital and disk versions, weigh in at around 10 ounces. or 300g less than the original PS5 consoles. Right now, there isn’t a lot of information on what is and isn’t in these consoles that can explain the difference in weight. It’s not just the new screw! Sony has been silent on these changes and hasn’t released much public information about them.

Back in may, a new wireless communication module has been registered by Sony for use in a new PS5 model. The new module replaces the J20H100 wifi module used in all PS5 launch machines. But until someone with the skills and tools gets their hands on one of these new Australian PS5s, we can’t be sure if this mod is there and if that explains the difference in weight.

In the meantime, if you’re still in the market for a PS5, good luck! Sony expects console shortage to be a problem until next year like the pandemic and an ongoing global chip shortage make it difficult for companies to produce and ship electronic devices. Don’t worry, you still don’t need a PS5. You have a lot of games in your backlog that you need to finish anyway. And now that you’ve waited almost a year, you’ve got a nice new screw in your PS5. See, good things come to those who wait.
