Authorities in New Orleans on Sunday identified an off-duty police officer who was fatally shot over the weekend while dining at a Houston restaurant.

The officer, Detective Everett Briscoe, was a 13-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said at a press conference.

Ferguson described Briscoe as a famous community policing officer who graduated from Southern University with a bachelor’s degree last week. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

“We lost a good one,” Ferguson said.

A second person who was injured in the shooting has not been identified. The person was in critical condition, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said at a previous press conference.

Two suspects who authorities say are linked to the shooting are still at large on Sunday.

The shooting took place shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday at a restaurant just west of downtown Houston after suspects entered the patio with guns and demanded items from customers, Finner said. Briscoe was with a group visiting Houston, Finner said.

“Everyone complied,” he said, adding that one of the suspects opened fire but nothing appeared to have been taken. “It does not mean anything.”
