LG Energy Solution currently produces approximately 5,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E battery modules per day. This is sufficient for 500 battery packs per day (there are 10 modules in a pack).
So? What’s the news here?
Well, I’ve already made the headlines: 500 battery packs a day for 350 days a year (which leaves a 15 day break due to various factors that can stop production for a while) would mean enough battery packs for 175,000 Mustang Mach -Es a year! Let’s take a closer look at the context to explain why this is particularly exciting.
When the Ford Mustang Mach-E was unveiled in November 2019, Ford indicated that 50,000 units of the electric crossover would be produced in its opening year. A Ford executive confirmed to me earlier this year that it was still the target for 2021. Of those 50,000, North America was supposed to get 20,000 and Europe 30,000. We have seen in recent months, there has been a strong consumer demand for the Mustang Mach-E on both continents. This had previously led me to speculate that Ford could produce 100,000 units by 2022. I wanted to believe that an even higher number was possible (after all, this is precisely the class of vehicle that people want these days, Mustang is a big brand, and the Mach-E is a great vehicle all around), but I didn’t want to go wild either. Additionally, maximum consumer demand is not the same as Ford’s maximum level of ambition and risk tolerance. Ford needs to increase its production capacity to a level it thinks will be profitable – to have a production line that only produces half of what it can produce or 75% of what it can produce because demand from consumers ends up being lower than expected can be catastrophic.
If all of the above is indeed correct, it could imply that Ford sees sufficient consumer demand for the Mach-E to increase production from 50,000 vehicles per year in 2021 to 150,000 or 175,000 in 2021. I still am not. not entirely convinced of this, because it is such a big leap. I will contact Ford after this article is published to see if I can get a comment on this. However, my source for the base figure is extremely solid. Although, that said, there is also always the possibility that I am missing a piece of the puzzle. Battery production may be planned in spurts over the long term. Battery production could outstrip vehicle production for some time due to potential disruptions later in the year or 2022. Plus, as Elon Musk regularly says, if part of a car is missing, you cannot ship the car. Thus, it is never known if other vehicle supply limitations may arise, which could result in a vehicle production rate much lower than 150,000 to 175,000 vehicles per year.
Another possibility: some of the batteries produced could be used in the Ford F-150 Lightning, may be. However, this is highly unlikely since the Ford F-150 Lightning is supposed to use SK Innovation batteries (not LG Energy Solution batteries). Additionally, there are other reasons why I think it is highly unlikely that I will not comment here.
I am not 100% sure that all of the battery modules produced can be used in the car. I guess they have passed quality inspections and are almost completely installed in vehicles, but I’m not 100% sure.
One thing I think we can conclude is that Ford is satisfied with the levels of consumer demand for the Mustang Mach-E in North America and Europe, and the company is increasing its production capacity in order to sell many more Mustangs. Mach. -Es in 2022. How many more? We will have to wait to see!
