After two practices together, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants concluded their weeklong battle with a preseason game on Sunday. In the end, the Browns held their own for a 17-13 victory, improving their record to 2-0 this preseason with their saves.
I was at the game, thanks to a pair of free tickets I won at Cross Country Mortgage training camp. My seats were in Section 322 (Standing Room Only), which was also billed as “Cross Country Mortgage Landing”. I had no idea what to expect from the neighborhood before the game, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it was in the shade, with patio furniture and a nice free buffet. Below you’ll see a video that includes a brief look at the area we were in, as well as the final 48 seconds of the first half (which crazily lasted over seven minutes, leading to no point).
As for the game itself, the Giants kicked in their first possession, then Cleveland went to work on offense with QB. Keenum case and Company. The Browns were rolling, including 14 and 18 yard runs by RB By Ernest Johnson and one end of 12 meters around WR Jojo natson. After finding himself in a go-to-go situation, Keenum’s second pass fell incomplete, then he was sacked for no gain on the third down to set up a 4th and a goal from the 7-yard line. Keenum found WR KhaDarel Hodge open on the left side for the score, giving the Browns a 7-0 lead.
The Giants responded with a long campaign to close the first quarter, with QB Mike glennon leading the charge. RB Devontae Booker hit him a yard to tie things up at 7-7.
Keenum also had the Browns drive in their next practice, but on a 3rd and 6th play from the 10-yard line he was selected in the end zone targeting TE. Jordan franks. It was a really bad decision and throw, as you can see from these footage I shot:
In the third trimester, RB John kelly hitting paydirt from 5 yards to make it a 14-7 game. Kelly had a big day with 9 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown to go with 1 catch for 21 yards.
Midway through the fourth quarter, QB Brian Lewerke brought the Giants back into the game with an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR David Sills to make it a 14-13 game. The teams are always aiming to avoid ties in the preseason, so the Giants have gone for two. Their first attempt was an incomplete pass, but a face mask and pass interference penalty was assessed to the Browns. The retry put the ball to the half-yard line, but the Cleveland defense stoned the Giants’ run attempt.
Cleveland came in range for a 49-yard field goal with just over two minutes to go, which K Chase McLaughlin drilled to make it a 17-13 match. It was up to the Browns’ defense to prevent a touchdown in order to seal the victory. Cleveland had some chances for the win, but the Giants continued to extend it. The Giants eventually reached the 27-yard line with six seconds left for a crack in the end zone. Lewerke was in disarray and sent the ball back across the pitch, looking for Sills, but a crowd of Browns defensemen were there. S Richard LeCounte came down with the interception for the touchback.
