Although he has some issues, The Simpsons Hit & Run has become a classic since its release almost 20 years ago. The game took the RGT model and added America’s most dysfunctional family, creating a fun game that has found solid audiences on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, selling over 3 million copies worldwide.
Despite the obvious desire for a remake or sequel – and the interest of co-showrunner Matt Selman – it doesn’t look like we’ll have a new episode anytime soon (Selman says “it’s a corporate octopus complicated in trying to make this happen “, apparently). This is why modder Reubs decided to take matters into his own hands and recreate the game using Unreal Engine 5 – with impressive results.
Using a tool created by fellow developer Lucas Cardellini, Reubs exported the original game’s Springfield map to Unreal Engine, then used a combination of AI and manual effort to add textures. He even went so far as to turn on ray tracing and extract audio from the original so the characters could talk. Then he got down to programming all of the game elements – such as collectibles – finally bringing together the opening segment of the original game into a playable demo.
This feat was so impressive that Joe McGinn, who was the lead designer of The Simpsons Hit & Run, posted on Reubs’ YouTube account to say how much he loved the demo:
Hello, I am the main designer of the original game. Amazing what you have accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be like. Awesome job!
Sadly, it appears Disney lawyers have made contact as Reubs removed the demo from his site. However, the mainstream reaction could hopefully convince those responsible to pull some strings and make a remaster – as there is clearly a lot of demand.
