The Minnesota Vikings are kicking off your Monday morning with news that is probably worth getting excited about.
According to numerous sources, the Vikings will sign a contract with defensive end Everson Griffen today. He trained last week and has apparently impressed the coaches enough where they are taking him for this season. The terms of the deal have not yet been made public.
Griffen spent his first 10 seasons in the NFL with the Vikings, before splitting the 2020 season between the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. He tallied 74.5 sacks while in Minnesota and was a starting defensive end for the team from 2014 to 2019.
At this point, I’m not sure if Griffen should immediately be listed as a starter or anything. Throughout camp, the position was contested between Stephen Weatherly and sophomore DJ Wonnum. While I’m not wondering if Griffen has something in the tank or not (because he obviously does), he’ll likely be more of a rotation player at this point.
Still, it’s something to be excited about, I think. Griffen had six sacks last season and can still get after the opposing quarterbacks. And I bet he’s also very excited to be back.
Once we’ve learned what the contract officially looks like, we’ll bring it to you here. But, for now, it is time to tell ourselves. . .
Welcome (back) to Minnesota, Everson Griffen!
