The imminent return of defensive end Everson Griffen to the Vikings was among the topics of conversation during Monday’s press conference with head coach Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer has confirmed that the team is close to a deal with a player who spent the first decade of his career in Minnesota. Griffen has started 87 games in his last six seasons with the club, but he will have a different role now that he’s back after parting ways last season between the Cowboys and Lions.

Zimmer said Griffen will be a “situational actor” with Stephen Weatherly and DJ Wonnum competing to start opposite Danielle Hunter.

“We talked to him for quite a while the other day,” Zimmer said, via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer press. “I think he seems to be in a good position and I hope he will continue to do so and if he does he can help us.”

The Vikings also brought cornerback Mackensie Alexander back to the squad after a year apart and they hope the two reunions will help push the Vikings in a better direction defensively.
