Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Twist Season 11 Premiere

The walking dead‘s Negan did not always make the right decisions; for example, there was the time when he ruled like a bloodthirsty, post-apocalyptic tyrant and murdered dozens of people. Since then, however, he has been trying to become a better person … emphasis on the word trying, like last night season 11 premiere show. Still, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan doesn’t think you should have been surprised.

Here’s the setup: Maggie leads a group of people through the DC Metro subway system in hopes of reaching her abandoned former settlement Meridian and food stores. Surprisingly, she takes Negan, her husband Glenn’s hated killer, on a trip. Negan has been trying to reform since then, mostly successful, but Maggie will never forgive or forget. So Tensions mount until Negan forces a confrontation, where he accuses her of bringing him on this mission to die (even though she has to kill him herself), as she denies that she is always thinks about killing Negan and is a hair’s breadth away from shooting him anytime, but manages to stop.

Eventually, a horde of zombies chase the group on top of a subway car, but they grab Maggie as she tries to climb the ladder to the roof. Negan, safely on top of the train, looks down at her, then chooses to turn away rather than help her.

It’s a dick move for a guy the show has been trying to redeem for some time, and a big step backwards for the character. Still, Morgan doesn’t think people should be surprised that Negan refuses to help the woman who has made it clear how much she hates him. As the actor said TV line when asked if that means Negan is a villain again:

“The public will take it as they want. There are Negan fans who will understand this move, and there are people who hate Negan who will see it and say, “He’s the same old guy.” For me, it’s a question of survival. It is a person who wants his death. But he’s not going to go out and break his head, because he’s also in a precarious situation with everyone. So it was kind of an opportunity that presented itself and he made a decision. “

To be fair, this is a very human decision, and a very Walking Dead decision. Morgan also believes that Negan weighed the scales and made a very conscious decision: “If she does, she does; if she doesn’t, she doesn’t. He knows there will be repercussions if she gets away with it. He is ready to take care of them.

Understandable or not, it’s still a bit narratively frustrating as it would have helped the long-standing character conflict subside a bit. Instead, Maggie will inevitably survive, and everyone in the group will hate and distrust Negan even more than they all do yet. It just gets repetitive to watch.

Honestly, I wouldn’t pass up the show for Morgan to lie for the sake of the twist, and for this upcoming episode, Negan will immediately come back to Maggie with something to help fend off the zombies that are holding her back or pulling her up. . Once again, the show that made this would lie about anything. Like Maggie, I never forgive or forget.
