WAVERLY, Ohio – A former Ohio County sheriff who is currently serving a state prison sentence for theft in office is being sued by county officials for salary and benefits they say they received inappropriately.
Pike County says Charlie Reader is expected to repay more than $ 128,000 he received while suspended from work. It is not known whether Reader has hired a lawyer to represent him in the litigation.
Reader, 47, was sentenced in March to three years. He had come forward for the investigation into the execution-style murders of eight members of the Rhoden family in April 2016 in the rural county. A man pleaded guilty to the case in March, while charges are still pending against the man’s brother and parents.
Reader was eventually charged with taking loans from sheriff’s office workers and a vendor and stealing over $ 14,000 in drug money seized from evidence envelopes to fund his gambling habit. . He then returned most of the money to the evidence envelopes, authorities said.
Reader agreed to be suspended as a sheriff in July 2019, shortly after being charged with 18 counts, including racketeering. He finally pleaded guilty in September 2020 to two counts of theft in the course of his duties, one count of tampering with evidence and one count of conflict of interest.
