Biggio was already seven games away on a minor-league rehab assignment, having been placed on the 10-day injured list on August 3 due to a tight back.
Between this injury and a previous passage in IL due to a sprained ligament in the cervical spine, it is perhaps not surprising that Biggio struggled to reach a slash line of .215 / .316 /. 350 out of 290 plate appearances this season. It was a difficult setback for a player who had apparently emerged in the young core of the Jays, as Biggio produced a 118 wRC + out of 695 PA in 2019-2020. This elbow injury could hamper Biggio’s chances of returning to the major league roster and recovering anything from this season, and it remains to be seen how he fits into Toronto’s plans for 2022.
