BEREA, Ohio – Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski answered questions from reporters on Monday, a day off for the team following Sunday’s 17-13 victory over the Giants.
Here is a transcript, provided by the Browns Media Relations Department:
Opening statement:
“Following yesterday’s injury, (CB) Greedy (Williams) is day to day with this groin injury, (LB) Montrel Meander will need surgery with an Achilles tendon injury, then (K) Cody Parkey will go to IR with his quad injury. Following the game, as we talked about, I thought there were a ton of teachable moments that we were going to watch the tape tomorrow with the players and really good situational football, I have some work to do, and it’s another big week of that work.
When Parkey was injured on the quad yesterday:
“I mean it was pre-game, but I’m not entirely positive about it.”
If Parkey’s injury means K Chase McLaughlin won the starting position or if the Browns will bring another K:
“(Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager) Andrew (Berry) and his team will be discussing these kinds of things. We’re still fighting for jobs on this 53. It’s still a big competition at all of these positions.
On if Parkey is finished for the season after being placed on IR:
“I wouldn’t go into that detail there. I’m sure we’ll issue a press release on this stuff. “
If Williams will still be able to train for a starting CB place despite the day-to-day injury:
“I think every day means he has to readjust, see how he’s doing tomorrow and see how the injury responds to the treatment and that sort of thing. As I mentioned before, we have a while before you have to set the depth chart, before you have to set the 53 and all that sort of thing. Lots of work for the guys to do this week in practice and then with this game to come.
On how comfortable the Browns are with CB Greg Newsome II as a potential starting CB, given Williams’ injury:
“All of these guys are competing for jobs. Greg does a good job competing on the training ground and in these games. Understand that he’s a rookie, but he’s a kid – like I mentioned the other day – who doesn’t make the same mistake twice. He is very diligent in his work. Ultimately, if he’s that guy, he’s someone we’re going to be counting on. All of these guys when these games start rolling, you count on them. It’s nothing new and it’s nothing these guys aren’t used to, especially playing at the cornerback position.
On the Browns and NY Giants starters warming up in full pads yesterday and whether that decision was made during the week or if it was a predetermined plan earlier in the preseason and training camp:
“We had a plan before this training camp and before preseason, but we really wanted to go into this week to make the final decisions, if you will. No different than what we are doing right now – we have a plan, but we want to see where we are. The idea that there was in Jacksonville, we worked these guys and we had them do a race so I didn’t have them do the pre-game warm-up. This week we didn’t run them before the game, we asked them to do the pre-game warm-up and then stay in their cushions. “
On how much the Browns deviated from the initial training camp and initially set preseason plans:
“We did not deviate from the plan. It’s just a matter of taking stock of where we are and having discussions in the building. I often use this line, but when the map differs from the terrain, you have to follow the terrain. We have the map and we are following it, but if something else presents itself, we will rotate. “
On the way McLaughlin played:
” He’s fighting. He’s doing a good job. I think you saw him in training. He did a good job with this placement in the Dawg Pound yesterday. He does a good job and expects him to keep fighting.
To determine how the Browns will be able to distribute the ball on offense, given the number of weapons available:
“That’s the kind of stuff we talk about throughout the offseason – how we guys want to use it. It’s part of the offseason and part of training camp is finding out what guys are up to, trying them out in certain roles and seeing how they react to it. We absorb all that as we go. When we get to Kansas City this week, we’ll have these discussions. As you go up the pieces and start moving the chess pieces around the chessboard, we’ll get to this point. In the meantime, it’s really about continuing to assess these players both as we build this squad and then see what their skills are in each position. “
If there are any concerns about preparing the starting defense for Week 1, given the number of injuries and the fact that the 11 planned starters may not have spent as much time together in training as desired:
“We’ve worked really hard here in the building, on the training ground and in the boardrooms to make sure our guys are on the same page. I enjoy the walkthroughs. I think the guys got locked into the walkthroughs. At the end of the day, I’d love to get the whole squad out – attacking, defense and special teams – and have the full complement of guys, but injuries are part of that, and we’re treating them accordingly. Guys work hard, I’ll tell you. It was nice to have (DE) Myles (Garrett) and (DE) Jadeveon (Clowney) there on Friday and we’ll be upping them up then. Guys will get healthy as we go here and get more guys here. I just think it’s a natural development as guys get off the detox list. “
If WR Odell Beckham Jr. can join team drills this week as part of the recovery and build-up plan:
“The point of it all has been to do this thing at the proper speed and to do it with the consultation of the medical team. We will continue to do so. I think there will be a time when he gets into team drills and that sort of thing, but we’ll make sure he’s ready for that.
On whether the Browns figured out a plan for starters’ playing time on Sunday:
“We have a plan and we’ve talked about it. I want to continue to see where we are this week before I finally sign this. I will talk to the players and I will certainly let you know. “
On the factors that go into deciding whether to attempt the fourth down or throw an FG, with specific reference to the fourth down attempt inside the 10-yard line yesterday:
“On basket attempts, I just don’t want to hit a basket that’s shorter than an extra point. It’s as simple as that. If it was a fourth and 12, could you hit a short basket? Maybe, but that’s the idea. On some of them you must see a punt or you must see a basket; that’s more than what you need to see the offense run another play. That’s the kind of thing we discuss when we make these decisions. “
S Grant Delpit or WR Anthony Schwartz are expected to return to training this week:
“We’ll see on those two guys, but I think they’re both progressing well. They work really hard in rehab. I’m hopeful to see one or both of these guys. I’m full of it. ‘hope.”
On the amount of time he spent talking with Berry about the number of players he wanted at each station when the list was reduced to 53:
“Yeah, we talk about it a lot. We spend a lot of time looking at this picture in depth. It’s ultimately Andrew’s decision, and he’s had some tough decisions to make. He does a great job posing some really good ones. questions to myself and the coaches, so it’s definitely a process. We have another week here of evaluations before those decisions are made. “
On whether there is a decent amount of flexibility when determining the roster of 53 players and the number of players at each position:
“I think Andrew wants to put together the best 53s, and that’s his goal. I think we are working hard to make sure we do. “
How much is kicking ability and knowledge at FirstEnergy Stadium taken into account in competing at K:
“These guys have been kicking the stadium quite a bit throughout training camp and will continue to do so. I’m disappointed for Cody, obviously. He’s a veteran and he was important to us in big moments last season, so I don’t want that to be lost there either. It’s disappointing for him, and I know his teammates feel bad about it.
If he talks to Browns players and asks them if they would like to play in the preseason:
“I’m definitely talking to them. I’m not necessarily doing a straw poll on who wants to play in the game, but their feedback is important. All we’re trying to do is have a smart plan for the Cleveland Browns and for the individual player, and that’s ultimately what we’ll do. “
On DE Malik McDowell’s performance in yesterday’s preseason game after not playing in a game for a significant period of time:
“I think he did a really good job, and I’m glad you raised him because he hasn’t played a game for a long time and he’s been through a lot. To see him play there, his teammates were excited for him. He continues to grind. He’s still working on this thing. I thought he had a good day.
On if McDowell seems comfortable with defense or is shaking a lot of rust:
“I think he’s doing a good job. I think he had worked really hard when we brought him into the building in the spring. Obviously he had a few injuries that set him back, but he stayed with the walkthroughs and stayed in the boardrooms. He’s a guy who really, really fights. He’s working very, very hard as we go through this training camp.
