Preseason football takes on another level of importance when your favorite team sports a shiny new quarterback, even if that caller isn’t guaranteed to start Week 1 of the regular season. A handful of teams had rookie gunslingers to show off – let alone evaluate – in the second weekend of preseason action. So which No.1 pick has performed the best in their last appearances? Which would need another long look before the real games begin?
Here’s how we would rank the five * first-round quarterbacks after their Week 2 preseason performances:
Statistics for week 2: 9-19, 80 yards, note 59.1, 46 rushing yards
He wasn’t bad, but this outing wasn’t as electric as his preseason debut. It didn’t help that Andy Dalton and Co. left him with a large deficit. Some shots were risky and he took one too many shots, but overall it was another step forward for a guy who clearly brings more juice than his counterpart. At the very least, he’s still a threat to extend or alter a game with his legs.
Statistics for week 2: 14-23, 113 yards, 73.3 yards, 9 rush yards, 1 bag
It wasn’t entirely his fault, but Lawrence didn’t seem comfortable against the Saints’ first-team defense for most of the evening. He continued to have to throw late and in midfield (and should have been intercepted by Marcus Williams on one of those shots), largely because his receivers weren’t opening quickly and his protection kept falling. Out of order. The Jags’ play calls also did him a disservice as they were ultra-conservative with running plays and swing passes designed on the first downs, falling into place with third and long on several occasions. Lawrence picked up a bit more pace in his last two practices and allowed the Jags to score points, but those two practices stuck in the red zone. – Jared Dubin
Statistics for week 2: 8-14, 102 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 INT, score 89.9
It was a much improved performance for Lance, who struggled quite a bit in his debut despite a highlight bomb. After a shaky start, during which he put too much heat on short throws, looked a bit hesitant in the pocket and deserved at least half the blame for a pick, the Dakota State product of the Nord titled two powerful shots with a few precision bullets. . It’s still missing too many easy throws, but you can see the physical talent, and that doesn’t even include the ground play it hasn’t been featured in yet.
Statistics for week 2: 13-19, 146 yards, odds 91.1
Tom Brady, is that you? I laugh. But if we want to congratulate Cam Newton for going through the Eagles savegames, we had better crown Jones for doing the same, if not more. What’s not to love about what this kid did after replacing Newton? He made quick decisions. He successfully moved around the pocket. He delivered another beauty with a deep shot. And he showed a surprising amount of zip on his passes. If he’s not considered the Pats’ Week 1 starter, he should be.
Statistics for week 2: 9-11, 128 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, 154.7 odds
The preseason stats are pretty darn meaningless. But the eye test is not. And Wilson passes it with flying colors. Not only did the BYU product produce an effective stat line in New York’s victory, but it once again showcased the fluid and fast arm talent that convinced the Jets to draft him No. 2 overall. Maybe in real games he’ll get himself into a mess, but he also seems able to get away with it too. This guy did some magic in Week 2’s limited action, and he’s got what it takes to do more.
