Psychonauts 2 charges more than twice as fast on Xbox Series X as it does on the backward compatible PS5 only

Psychonauts 2 is almost here (finally) and it looks like the game is not only super fun, but also a solid technical achievement. YouTube channel ElAnalistaDeBits has been running Psychonauts 2 on all consoles, and for the most part the news is good, although PS5 owners are a bit more disappointed.

As we reported earlier, Psychonauts 2 will only be playable on PS5 via backward compatibility, with improved performance to 60fps being the only additional feature you can expect. Well, it looks like Double Fine didn’t put much effort into optimizing loading from the PS5’s fast SSD as it takes around 7 seconds to boot up a level on the Xbox Series X / S and close. 20 seconds on the PS5. At least it’s not as bad on Xbox One and PS4 – loading a level takes over a minute on last-gen systems. While we already have a lot of information about the resolution and target performance of Psychonaut 2 on most systems, ElAnalistaDeBits provides a bit more information about 120fps performance modes on Xbox Series X / S – on Series X , the mode works at 1440p and on the S series it is 1080p. Speaking of performance, that’s good news pretty much across the board. The latest generation systems operate at 30 fps, the new generation systems maintain 60 fps and the Xbox Series X / S is sticking the landing with its 120 fps modes. The only time the frame rate flickers on the latest gen systems and the PS5 is when there is some background loading, the problem being more serious on the XB1 / PS4. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X / S does not suffer from the same problem.

Psychonauts 2 is a comedy game at its heart. He doesn’t take himself or the genre too seriously which allows him to do amazing things. The platform is top-notch, the story is witty, silly, and fascinating, and an adventure as bizarre as the name suggests. Since its release, there has been a cult following around the early Psychonauts, and it deserved this praise. The sequel builds on it, making it as fun as fans expected and as weird as newcomers hoped. Psychonauts 2 keeps an impossible promise with flawless quality and inspiring weirdness throughout.
