FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) – Gov. Andy Beshear was surprised by the Kentucky Supreme Court ruling, which said laws limiting his emergency powers should not have been blocked.

“I will say I was surprised by the decision,” Beshear said. “There was page after page in the previous opinion that talked about potential constitutional powers. I think part of the court has changed their minds. But that’s what it is. When they rule, it is. is the law. Do I think it will have ramifications? Yes. But at the end of the day, once it comes out, you have to follow it. “

Despite the surprise, Beshear said he was ready to work with lawmakers. He said he had already had several calls with the leaders of both legislative chambers.

“Our discussions have been constructive. It’s been a good dialogue, ”Beshear said. “I hope they will make the best decisions, and sometimes the courageous decisions that are necessary.”

Beshear said he would not be able to respond to the pandemic like he has done before.

“What will change is the scope of the decisions that I can take or what we can do is going to be more limited, depending on what the legislator decides,” he explained.

He explained that tough choices now await lawmakers.

“So far I have worn football. I’ve been able to make some tough and unpopular decisions – and trust me, I’ve seen some of the protesters show up when I think I’ve done the right thing. It was always the difficult thing.
