More than 2,700 Utahns tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, and 12 more Utahns died from the disease.
There were 1,221 cases reported on Friday, 863 on Saturday and 647 on Sunday, for a total of 2,731 and a daily average of just over 910, the Utah Department of Health reported on Monday. The UDOH also removed 13 previous cases from COVID-19 statistics, after further testing, so the overall number increased by 2,718 cases.
(The number of tests – and the number of new cases – typically decreases on weekends, especially Sunday.)
Almost one in five new cases was a school-age child – 203 cases in children aged 5 to 10, 132 cases aged 11 to 13, and 199 cases aged 14 to 18.
The average number of cases over the past three days is 60 fewer than a week ago (970 on August 16). That’s about 26% higher than a month ago (669 on July 23) and more than six times what it was three months ago (148 on May 23). Six months ago, there were 823 new cases (February 23); and a year ago there were 249 new cases (23 Aug 2020).
The seven-day moving average of new cases stands at 1,084, the highest since February 8.
In the past four weeks, unvaccinated Utahns were 5.1 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those vaccinated, according to UDOH analysis. The unvaccinated were also 6.4 times more likely to be hospitalized and five times more likely to test positive for coronavirus.
An additional 9,983 Utahns were fully vaccinated in the last day, bringing the total to 1,548,921, or 47.3% of Utah’s total population.
According to UDOH, there have been 8,464 “groundbreaking” cases of COVID-19 in Utah – people who contracted the virus two weeks or more after being fully vaccinated. 1 in 183 people are fully vaccinated.
Of this number, 482 were hospitalized, or 1 in 3,214 people were fully vaccinated. And there were 39 deaths, or 1 in 39,716 people fully vaccinated.
