Ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made sure their star quarterback was on top of all of their plans, whether it was to potentially pass a first pick to a quarterback (Kyle Florida’s Trask in the second round) or help them watch the film from wide receiver perspectives.
That being the case, we can assume that when the Bucs traded in the fourth round to North Texas’s Jaelon Darden, it was a decision that had Brady’s stamp of approval.
Now that Darden is in his squad, Brady makes sure to give him all the practical tutoring he needs to quickly become another trusted target in the Tampa Bay Star Offensive.
“The first time I met him after the draft I was struck by the limelight,” Darden recently told NBC Sports’ Peter King. “He said, ‘Hey Jaelon. Glad to have you on the team. I have studied your film. What an honor. Then he took the time to teach me how to win against blankets. Like, “When the corner kick plays you here, I’m going to have the ball there.” Every day, I put on my helmet, I work and I learn.
Brady understands the challenges new receivers face and is doing everything he can to make the transition as smooth as possible for his new teammate.
“It’s really tough for a rookie receiver in the NFL,” Brady told King. “Everything is new. You have a game, then I change the game, then I look at you and I change the course, then I see a defense that we haven’t necessarily talked about. Every game that I look like, hey, this is what I think. And you have to have someone who can take criticism.
Darden has shown flashes throughout training camp and preseason, and while he’s most likely to see most of his action as a rookie on special teams, injuries could quickly put him on the road. push to play a larger role in the offensive.
If that happens, Brady makes sure it will be up and running.
