Joe Judge says Daniel Jones will play entire first half of Giants’ preseason final, undecided on Saquon Barkley

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge kept starting quarterback Daniel Jones on the sidelines for the first two preseason games, but announced on Monday that Jones will play the entire first half when the Giants host the New England Patriots next Sunday.

“This week we’ll be treating more like the regular season dress rehearsal,” Judge said, via SNY. “My expectations at this point would be for Daniel to play at least the first half and decide what we do after half later in the week.”

As to why Judge didn’t give Jones a playoff or two this weekend against the Cleveland Browns, the second-year head coach said he was happy with what he got out of his quarterback during joint practices leading up to the match.

“It really came down to what we thought we had accomplished in practice, with both volume and intensity as the [starting] unit, ”Judge said, via NJ.com. “We initially thought about playing these guys for about a quarter. We made the decision based on what they had experienced in terms of physical load and intensity [during joint practices with the Browns]. “

Jones is entering a pivotal season. Although he threw 22 interceptions and escaped 29 times in 27 total games, there have been times he has shown star potential. Jones threw 35 touchdowns in his first two seasons and also ran for 702 yards and three other scores. With improved defense and a few key additions from the offensive end of the ball, such as wide receivers Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and John Ross III, the expectations are huge – which the Duke product has accepted.

Jones also recovers star running back Saquon Barkley, who missed most of last year with an ACL tear. He hasn’t played any snap this preseason either, and it doesn’t look like he’ll get any action in the Giants’ final exhibition game.

“I would say it’s not decided yet,” the judge said of Barkley, via SNY. “We will discuss with the medical team. The priority will be to continue to ramp it up and to do more and more.”

We’ll have to wait until September 12 to see the entire Giants offense play together, but Jones is finally getting some action is something all fans look forward to.
