Remarks: Yordenis Ugas made the biggest statement of his career, beating and may be retired on Saturday, Manny Pacquiao, 42.
While Pacquiao was indeed old, he was also still competitive, although loss was clear. I’ve dropped Manny to No.5 for now, but I expect him to announce his retirement in the relatively near future. It might take a few months for him to figure all this out, and it should, he has earned that right, and that’s where the retreats that also stick out usually come from, not the “hot of the moment” retreats after a defeat.
In that sense, would I pick Pacquiao to beat Danny Garcia right now? Maybe, but it would be a tough fight for both of them. I don’t think I would choose him to beat Vergil Ortiz or Jaron Ennis, as I think they’re both too explosive and have too much youthful power, as big as Manny’s chin. But Pacquiao is seated at five for the moment.
Ugas goes up to three, leaping over Shawn Porter. I know Porter beat Ugas in 2019, but it was very questionable, to begin with, and it’s not 2019 either. But it’s a switchable position, I think. The first four are, to me, pretty clear at this point, with 1-2 being Spence / Crawford or Crawford / Spence, and 3-4 being Ugas / Porter or Porter / Ugas.
