Earlier this year spy photos of the Ford Fiesta caught the camouflage-covered tailgate, even though it’s just a mid-cycle refresh, which is often a slight styling makeover. The current Fiesta, now in its seventh generation, debuted for the 2017 model year, and the latest spy photos show the tailgate dropping a significant portion of its camouflage revealing a tailgate that looks quite familiar.
The additional camouflage had to be a decoy as the car looks quite similar to the one on sale today. The rear looks completely exposed at first glance, but a strip of camouflage covers the edges of the taillights. It seems unchanged otherwise. The front clip still has a lot of camouflage, which covers the hood and the majority of the front fairing. However, we can see a new bumper design sitting under new headlights, which appear to be flanking a redesigned grille.

We don’t expect Ford to make any changes under the hood. The Dearborn-based automaker recently added a mild hybrid setup to the Fiesta for the 2020 model year, pairing a 48-volt mild hybrid system with its 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Ford also fitted the runabout with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The current harvest of engines is expected to continue until at least 2026, when Ford says every European model will be offered with either a plug-in hybrid or all-electric powertrain.
The updated Ford Fiesta is expected to debut in spring 2022, with the sportier ST variant expected to follow. However, don’t expect it in the United States. Ford ditched the model here when it decided to focus more on producing more profitable crossovers, SUVs and trucks, though that move left the brand without an affordable entry-level offering. It’s a role the new Maverick pickup is designed to fulfill, although not everyone wants a truck. The last model year of the Fiesta here was for 2019.
