After decades of catering for Chicago-area shoppers, Disney stores will soon no longer have a presence in the area.

The Magnificent Mile site, along with stores at Woodfield Mall, Gurnee Mills and Chicago Premium Outlets, will close in September, according to the company’s website. The Michigan Avenue store will close “on or before” September 1, while other stores will close “on or before” September 15.

The Walt Disney Co. is closing nearly 60 of its retail stores across the country, according to USA Today, as Target plans to open more than 100 new Disney stores in its stores ahead of the holiday season.

In March, Walt Disney Co. announced it was reducing the number of stores to focus on its e-commerce business.

“As consumer behavior has shifted towards online shopping, the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer,” said at the time Stephanie Young, president of consumer products, games and retail. editing.

The closures do not affect more than 600 stores at Disney theme parks and Target locations, USA Today reported.
