Jeffrey Dean Morgan called “The Walking Dead” showrunner Angela Kang worried after learning how the Season 11 premiere ended.
“I called her right away and I was like, ‘We can’t do this,'” Morgan said during the show’s aftershow, “Talking Dead.” “I was pretty adamant about it.”
During the episode, Negan, who has worked to erase his reputation for the past few years on “TWD” after brutally killing Maggie’s (Lauren Cohan) husband Glenn in season seven, has the opportunity to save Maggie.
After acting coldly towards him throughout the episode, with good reason, Maggie calls out to her as she struggles to climb a subway car ladder and the dead try to cling to her. Instead of helping out, Negan looks down and decides to abandon Maggie when needed.

The episode ends with Maggie slipping and falling from the subway car as a group of undead.
To some fans, it may seem like Negan is suddenly reverting to his old ways or all of the growth he’s shown since season nine has gone for nothing. Morgan shared this concern and called a few of his cast before speaking with Kang.
“I had talked to Lauren and I had talked to Norm [Reedus] and then I called Angela and I was like, ‘This is a horrible idea. All the good we did was immediately gone, ”Morgan said.
Why Negan doesn’t save Maggie
Negan examines the land when Maggie calls for help, sees a group of undead, looks at her, then simply disappears from view without saying a word.

Morgan said he came up with the idea after watching the entire episode. He was glad they hadn’t changed him.
“It makes a lot of sense now, in retrospect,” Morgan said.
When asked why Negan hadn’t immediately tried to save Maggie, Morgan replied, “He is convinced at this point that she is going to kill him … He is convinced that he is a dead man. and that they are all in the game, he is sure of it.
Later in the episode, when a fan asks Morgan if Maggie would have left Negan for dead if the tables had been turned, he said, “She would have pushed him. There wouldn’t have been any fights. She would have pushed him. wants dead. ”
Kang weighed in to say that Maggie probably would have made the same choice Negan did.
The end of the premiere wasn’t the only moment that concerned Morgan.

Earlier in the episode, after being bullied and pushed around throughout the episode, Negan calls Maggie out, saying that her anger and rage towards him blinds her ability to lead the group safely through Dark and potentially dangerous subway tunnels.
He suggests that Maggie kill him on the spot and get it over with, saying, “I’m not going to let you drag me through mud and dirt and mud to put me down like a dog,” Negan said.
He pauses before adding shockingly, “Like Glenn was.”
The thought of Negan mentioning Glenn should immediately conjure up footage from the “TWD” season seven premiere.

Morgan was just as shocked as viewers to learn that Negan dared to tell Maggie’s name Glenn.
“That was phone call number two,” Morgan said, calling Kang to discuss Negan by saying Glenn’s name.
Season 11 was the first time Negan had spoken Glenn’s name to her and was an especially shocking moment to hear in the episode.
Kang responded at length to Entertainment Weekly’s Dalton Ross on the decision to have Negan say Glenn’s name.
“For me, a Negan that’s completely soft isn’t interesting. And I think that’s not really true either,” Kang said. “If it had all the edges sanded, I would never think it was genuine.”
“What is true about Negan is that he really enjoys talking about his own philosophy. He definitely has his own view of how the world should work, and there has been a shift in those views at times. , but he’s got a big mouth. Sometimes he can’t help himself, “Kang added, saying it was important for them to maintain the fundamental integrity of Negan’s character, which is his advantage, and that l sometimes leads to saying shocking things.
Maggie and Negan’s strained relationship will continue to play a central role this season.

Earlier this year, Kang had already told Insider that Maggie and Negan were to come on “TWD”.
“It’s one of the relationships that is so strained and so it’s extremely interesting for us,” Kang said in February.
Paola Lázaro, who plays Princess, had the best reading of Maggie / Negan’s current situation, claiming on “Talking Dead” that she thought Maggie was “sidetracking a bit” when it premiered. Although Maggie may have needed to be scared to wake up, Negan shouldn’t have left Maggie hanging.
The actress had a great suggestion for the two to move forward this season.
“They have to sit down and talk about it,” Lázaro said. “I don’t know if there is any redemption for Negan, but she needed to be afraid.”
That’s probably not where we’ll see them heading anytime soon, but it’s not a bad idea. Princess can lead the therapy session.
