Chopmaster J – co-founder of pioneering hip-hop group Digital Underground – was asked to stay away from an event honoring the group and their late co-founder Shock G … and he’s certainly not happy with it.
Sources with first-hand knowledge tell TMZ … Chopmaster J was elated when he found out that the town of Oakland would honor the group and Shock G during a city wide event Last weekend. The day included a day of underground digital proclamation.
Problem is … we’re told that a former manager of the band contacted CJ and told him he was NOT welcome at the event. To make matters worse… we’re told that the City of Oakland’s Digital Underground Day of Proclamation only serves to highlight Shock G, not CJ.
Digital Underground split in 2008 after an argument between Chopmaster J and Shock G… but we’re told they didn’t talk to each other for years after the split, they still saw each other as brothers outside of the band. Shock G passed away in april.
Chopmaster J – with his son, who passes SOTU – formed a new group … DU Next Generation.
We’re told Chopmaster J is disappointed that his contributions to the band’s legacy weren’t even mentioned in the proclamation. The language is exclusive to Shock G contributions… although August 25, 2021 is slated to be Digital Underground Day in Oakland.
There is hope that things can be rectified. We are told Chopmaster J has contacted city officials and, so far, the Mayor of Oakland Libby schaaf responded and we’re told the city is currently discussing a separate proclamation for Digital Underground that mentions Chopmaster J.
