Microsoft has revealed the next major additions to come Microsoft Flight simulator later this year, including the Volocopter VoloCity air taxi; updated maps for the regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland; and a competitive online multiplayer racing mode.
The first is a new series of “Local Legends” planes that are added to Flight simulator, which will offer famous planes in a specific region that may not be so well. The objective is to make these planes roll alongside Flight simulatorGlobal Updates, so the first Local Legend aircraft will coincide with the upcoming Global Update VI (featuring Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) and deliver a hyper-realistic recreation of the Junkers JU-52. The Global Update will be released on September 7 for free, while the Junkers JU-52 will retail for $ 14.99.
On the flip side, Microsoft is also adding a much more futuristic aircraft in a November update: Volocopter’s VoloCity air taxi, an eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) helicopter with big ideas for rethinking urban mobility (even though the first real-world flights were somewhat disappointing.)
Finally, this fall, Microsoft adds the Stihl National Championship air races as “the first major expansion” to Flight simulator. The new expansion will be an eight-player race mode, and it will allow players to fly WWII planes at breakneck speeds to prove who the best pilot of all is. However, there is no specific release date yet, although it should be released in the fall.
The new racing mode will feature a major break from reality, however: Microsoft Flight Simulator Jorg Neumann tells Polygon that due to contractual agreements with the manufacturers, the game cannot show that the planes are damaged, so when the players collide in the races, the planes will simply disappear.
