Magic: The Gathering’s Lord of the Rings crossover is going to be huge

Magic: The GatheringThe next set based on the Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkien will be a modern full legal card set. The official title is now The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-earth. The announcement was made on Tuesday at the Magic Showcase 2021 streaming event.

First revealed to investors in 2020, the Lord of the Rings set will not be available until 2023. It is part of the Universes Beyond initiative, which includes daring crossovers with Warhammer 40,000, Fortnite, and street fighter. Like the previous one Adventures in Forgotten Realms – which first introduced iconic characters and locations from Dungeons & Dragons in the original collectible card game – this will be a full line of merchandise. This means players will be able to draft maps for the take-out game and participate in multiplayer matches with one of four pre-built Commander decks.

Making gambling legal for Modern also means that Hobbits, Elves, and Uruk-hai will appear in competitive circles for years to come.

“We have these characters with so much backstory and their own personalities and their own stories,” product architect Mark Heggen said at the event, “and now we can put them on a Magic card and we want both to be true to their spirit and to put a little Magic twist on them.

The Lord of the Rings themed set will be available in physical and digital format. It is planned to be released for Online magic and Magic: The Gathering Arena. There will also be several Secret Lair drops, according to Heggen.
