It’s official: Jennifer Carpenter will appear in the next Showtime Dexter revival – and she will do so as a full-fledged series regular, TVLine confirmed.

In addition, Carpenter, who participated in a Tuesday Dexter Questions and Answers to the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour – revealed she will be playing an imaginary new version of Debra, who was killed in the 2013 series finale.

Basically Deb is the new Harry.

“I don’t consider her a ghost [per se, but] more a link or an echo or an inconvenient truth for Dexter, ”explained the actress. “[She] sort of comes back to haunt and punish and heal and provoke and love [him]. “

Hall added: “As much as [Deb] is an internalized character for Dexter, I think [she] represents how far he fell… without a compass. I was so excited for Jennifer to do this because I knew she would be able to shape shift and come to Dexter from so many different places. And, of course, she did. And it was really fun opening up our sense of [Dexter]is the interior landscape, because it is much more pyrotechnic and crazy than before.

Rumors of Debra’s possible return started swirling back in March when Carpenter shared a photo of her on set wearing Deb’s horizontal stripes on Instagram. And then last month, comrade Dexter Veterinarian John Lithgow – who is set to briefly reprise his role as Trinity Killer – hinted at Deadline that “it was just wonderful to join this gang – including Michael. [C. Hall] and Jennifer Carpenter and [exec producer] Clyde Phillips.

As stated previously, Dexter: new blood (watch the trailer here) picks up nearly a decade after the largely botched finale, with Dexter now residing in the fictional small town of Iron Lake in upstate New York. Veteran character actor Clancy Brown (Carnival and billion) will play Kurt Caldwell, the main antagonist of the revival, the unofficial mayor of Iron Lake (watch the trailer).

The cast also includes GoliathJulia Jones (as Iron Lake’s first Native American police chief), Underground and Joan the Virgin alum Alano Miller (as Sergeant Iron Lake PD) and Lovecraft Country‘s Jamie Chung (as a famous Los Angeles true crime podcaster who finds herself caught up in the still-obscure central mystery).

Earlier on Tuesday, Showtime boss Gary Levine avoided questioning whether Dexter: new blood – which airs Sunday, November 7 on Showtime – could return for another season. He did, however, assure fans that the 10-episode event series would serve as a “fitting finale to a brilliant series.”
