by netflix Magic: The Gathering The animated series will air during the second half of 2022 and will star Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as Gédéon Jura. The announcement was made on Tuesday at the Magic Showcase 2021 streaming event.
Daniel Ketchum, Wizards of the Coast’s lead designer for franchise development, was on hand to deliver the news. He said all scripts are currently final and the full first season has been recorded by his lead voice actors. He added that the series will be perfect for devoted fans of the greatest Magic narrative, but for newcomers, will not require any prior experience with the franchise to enjoy it.
A prequel novel is on its way from Penguin Random House, accompanying the animated series.
“This is going to tell the story of Gideon Jura and Jace Beleren,” Ketchum said, referring to the unnamed novel. “How they met. We can see them travel through the multiverse, righting some wrongs. We will also see where their relationship deteriorates.
Gideon and Jace are planeswalkers, powerful spellcasters in the world of Magic: The Gathering. Gideon notably died in fiction during the event known as War of the Spark. His last moments were recorded in the novel War of the Spark: Ravnica by Greg Weismann (Gargoyles, Star Wars Rebels) and in an exclusive card game called the Signature Spell Book.
Brothers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame) initially had to adapt Magic: The Gathering for Netflix, but broke with the studio because of creative differences. Jeff Kline (Processor premium) has since taken over the project, as first reported by Deadline.
