The Dodgers have announced they have activated Julio Urias from the 10-day injured list. He will get the ball for tonight’s game against the Padres. To open an active list space, the reader Nephthali Happy has been designated for assignment. The move also opens up a spot on Los Angeles’ 40-man roster, which now numbers 39.
Urías missed the minimum ten days after landing on the IL with a contusion to her left calf. That kind of reliability has been essential for a Dodgers rotation that has faced its fair share of injuries. Notably, Clayton kershaw has been out since July 7 with an inflamed forearm. Kershaw kicked off a quickball-only bullpen session today, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register). This is obviously progress, but Roberts later admitted that there was some uncertainty about whether the three-time Cy Young Award winner would have enough time to build up his arm strength to withstand the workload of ” a traditional starting pitcher for the rest of the season (via Juan Toribio from MLB.com).
Urias’ return to the lineup could end Feliz’s tenure in the Dodger after just one appearance. The former closest to the Rangers was selected in the major league roster last week and started for the first time on Sunday against the Mets. He pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout but will now find himself on waivers in the coming days. Féliz has been excellent this season at the AAA level, combining for a 2.45 ERA with a whopping 38.8% strikeout rate and an average goal percentage of 9.7% between the major affiliates of the Phillies and the Dodgers.
