Booker T has slammed CM Punk’s first AEW promo, and the five-time WCW heavyweight world champion has said Punk “has been written off.”
Punk’s comeback, especially its promo, was widely praised, and The Straight Edge Superstar referred to Britt Baker, Ring Of Honor, and his upcoming game against Darby Allin during the 15-minute segment. Punk did briefly mention his departure from WWE, however, saying he wasn’t going to be healthy by staying in the same place that made him sick in the first place.
Speaking about the Punk promo on the Hall Of Fame podcast, Booker T said the Punk promo was “just a total dud”, mainly because he mentioned WWE.
“CM Punk came back and he had a full 10 minutes of TV to go over there and make his point on CM Punk comeback. He had the perfect crowd to be able to go and really, I’m talking about having a partying in this United Center. But CM Punk came back and took his moment and chose to talk about WWE, ”said Booker T.
“It’s true that there was just a total failure as far as I’m concerned [he] removed. I can only imagine if The Rock had those same 21,000 in Miami, Florida. The Rock would have talked about every landmark in Miami and that everyone in Miami frequented … he would have made these fans go crazy with excitement but CM Punk chose to talk about WWE and 9 minutes went by so slowly when that could have been a party at the United Center.
“I’m saying from the point of view of where I’m making my comeback and I think about the other side, it’s totally a place I wouldn’t even go. Plus you talk about how the moment started going up and after the music stopped the going up just started going down. It never came back. Is this a moment for you? I get it, I understand that, but my point is the moment once the bell rings and the bell rings after the music stops as far as I’m concerned and I just don’t think CM Punk delivered the way it might have regarding a promo because that I did not feel the promo, “he continued.
“I felt like a guy talking about WWE and when you talk to the other side the only thing you do is give these guys airtime. Of course I know the crowd of AEW is going to eat this but for me as a pro it’s the last thing I’m going to think about is the other side. I’m going to think about the here and now. Like I said I can cheat on me but I just think he missed a moment there in front of his hometown [with] over 20,000 people. ”
Following a response in the Hall Of Fame chat room, Booker T said his affiliation with WWE had not swayed his opinion.
“For me, that was the same promo that was given to WWE. It was about WWE. It wasn’t meaningful in terms of what I’m going to create, who I’m going to blow up, how am I going to take AEW being a nice guy and throwing creepy ice cream bars, who cares? ” Booker T added.
