Vic Fangio is yet to decide on Broncos’ starting quarterback: “We just want to do it at the right time”

The Denver Broncos have yet to name a starting quarterback for Week 1 against the New York Giants. That’s okay with head coach Vic Fangio, as the battle continues.

“We haven’t decided that yet,” Fangio told reporters during the Broncos’ practice on Tuesday. “We just want to do it at the right time. Obviously the right time for the players involved, the team involved and everyone. And we don’t play another game (regular season) for 19 days.”

Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater are still competing for the job, as neither player has created separation from the other. Lock is 14 of 21 for 231 yards and two touchdowns (score 135.2) while Bridgewater is 16 of 19 for 179 yards with two touchdowns (score 141.0). Neither of them threw an interception or recorded a fumble.

“We have two quarterbacks that we think we can go with,” Fangio said. “The competition does that. It’s pretty damn tight. It’s hard to find a guy after every practice. It’s been tight, but close to the good.”

Denver has had 10 starting quarterbacks in the past five seasons – the most in the NFL. The Broncos have placed in the last five in touchdowns, passer rating, yards per attempt and completion percentage during that span, so it’s critical that Denver get that quarterback pick. correctly.

Bridgewater has had a better 2020 season than Lock, but Lock has had a solid camp and worked with Peyton Manning during the offseason. The decision will be difficult for Fangio, although he is satisfied with the performance of both players over the past month.

“I’ll talk to them when the time comes when we declare either (the incumbent),” Fangio said. “I think they know it’s close. They see each other’s movie, and the good thing is they shoot each other.
