What is the milk crates challenge? Dangerous craze sweeps across social media, FDA steps in

Social media users test their climbing and balancing skills with crates of milk, and it causes severe pain for some.

The “milk crates challenge” is said to have grown in popularity, with several users recording and posting their attempts to walk through stacked crates of milk.

Like many other viral challenges before this, the failures circulated on TikTok, YouTube, and Internet forums.

The challengers would have fallen from dangerous heights which could have serious or nearly fatal consequences.

The hashtag #MilkCrateChallenge does not exist on TikTok at the moment and returns an error message saying it cannot be found when users try to search for it.

An alternative hashtag that has not yet been deactivated – #MilkCratesChallenge – contains 11 videos related to the term, and at least one includes an automated warning from TikTok stating that “the action in this video could result in serious injury.”

“TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our community guidelines to discourage such content,” a TikTok spokesperson wrote to FOX News. “We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior, whether online or offline.”

Comedian Conan O’Brien tweeted about the viral trend on Monday, August 23, saying, “I’m awaiting FDA approval before I take on the milk crate challenge.”

The federal agency responded to O’Brien’s tweet the same day and suggested he refrain from participating.

“Although we regulate milk, we cannot recommend that you try this,” the FDA responded. “Maybe enjoy a nice 2% drink and bring all those cases back to the grocery store?”

Millions of people seem to have seen videos under the hashtags #MilkCrate and #MilkCrates, but most of the linked videos feature reactions and comments based on the opinion of TikTok users and verified creators – most of them agree that the challenge can be dangerous.

Several milk crate challenge videos currently exist on YouTube, although it is not known which platform the challenge originated on.
