FOXBOROUGH, Mass .– After the final training whistle on Wednesday, Giants head coach Joe Judge took his entire team for a jog across the field, through a gate and onto lower court. This is where “the hill” is located. The judge ran his team in conditioning sprints up and down the hill, which is a New England football tradition with Bill Belichick leading the show.
“It was different,” said tight end Evan Engram. “Back in the Pee Wee days, I had a hill that we used to run after training. It was going down a bit in the past. But it was a good job.
It was hard work, in the 91 degree heat.
“It’s a different way of conditioning yourself,” said Daniel Jones. “It was good. Yeah, a lot of fun.
This last part was said with a smile, tinged with sarcasm.
The judge wants to go up a hill at the Giants’ training center and already has the owner’s approval to do so.
Cornerback Adoree ‘Jackson was taken off the field at the end of joint practice. Jackson was knocked down over the course of a few drills, once coming off the field for a team period for a few games after slipping into cover before returning. When he came out, he was replaced by rookie Rodarius Williams.
Jackson is struggling with some sort of ankle problem, with 18 days until the regular season opener against the Broncos. The ankle problem, however, is not considered to be serious.
TE Kyle Rudolph underwent foot surgery after signing with the Giants in mid-March and was dropped off the physically unable to play roster on Wednesday. He participated in a few individual exercises. It will be difficult for him to be ready in time for the opening game of the regular season on September 12.
“My goal is to improve myself every day and make sure I’m in good shape to go when this team needs me,” said Rudolph.
The judge opened his remarks by expressing sympathy for former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who revealed on Tuesday that his wife, Judy, had deteriorating health.
“Look, what Coach Coughlin has done for the organization, for his players, obviously says a lot,” said Judge. “He even went further with his loved ones and his wife, so whatever we can do to support the family, like he supported the organization, we always will. Coach Coughlin has been great for me personally so whatever he needs from me I’ll be there for him. ”
There was a minor skirmish and it happened early on, as the Patriots ‘offensive line and Giants’ defense line crammed onto the grass in 1-on-1 drills.
“I think we were just talking,” Patriots center David Andrews said unmoved. Both teams were sent off on a penalty lap.
OT Nate Solder returned after a missed time with a shoulder issue. … Shane Lemieux (knee) was restrained and Kenny Wiggins moved in with the first unit in left guard. …. Quarterback Clayton Thorson was released with an injury settlement.
Ryan Santoso scored two field goals, including one from 50 yards, towards the end of practice. The Giants are looking to trade Santoso as they are locked in with veteran Graham Gano as the kicker. The Patriots, who may be looking for a new kicker, got to see Santoso firsthand. … Jon Bon Jovi, a notorious Patriots fan, was a visitor to practice.
