South Carolina: 52-year-old woman dies after being mutilated by her own dogs

A woman from South Carolina died Thursday after being mutilated by her own dogs despite neighbors who fought to save her.

Nancy Cherryl Burgess-Dismuke, 52, of Greenville, South Carolina, was attacked by her two dogs, described as blends of boxers Thursday afternoon, FOX Carolina reported. Senior Deputy Coroner, Kent Dill, stated that she "had been the victim of multiple dog bites in the upper arm, resulting in significant blood loss".

Neighbors who witnessed the incident said they ran home after hearing the attack. When they found the victim, they saw both dogs "nipping at him and bringing his body back to his house," Greenville News reported.

Investigators said that Burgess-Dismuke struggled with his dogs in his garden when they became aggressive.

"We had the impression that they were really playing at them, eating it alive," Greenville News told Amber Greer, a witness who had called 911.

Neighbors told the local media that they were trying to beat the dogs so that they were freeing the victim.

"When they finally managed to take the dogs away and send them away, she threw her body over the fence," said Greer. "She did not jump, she threw her body like never before, they ate it."

Burgess-Dismuke was transported to Greenville Hospital Memorial Hospital, where she died. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office was investigating the case. The Greenville County Animal Control took the two dogs that needed to be euthanized.

William Long, a neighbor, said Burgess-Dismuke was "a real kind woman."
