Well, he was a savage. A scheduled 7-innings affair lasted 10 innings, with the Rockies eventually paying it in the 10th against Jake Jewell, who had been called up as the 27th man, to end it.
Even against the Rockies outside of Coors Field, the Cubs couldn’t get the sweep. Raise your shoulders.
The Cubs took a big lead early on – crowned with fun at the basics – but it evaporated behind a Connor Joe grand slam and the struggling Cubs’ enclosure. But with one out and two at the end of 7th (aka the 9th), Ian Happ sent one to the left center basket to tie him up and send the play to the extras.

Late in the 8th, after scoring a point at the top of the frame, the Rockies got a ground ball with two outs to end the thing… except Trevor Story threw the ball next week. Tied on points, and we enter the normal final round of an MLB game.
Ah, but even that wasn’t enough to fix it! Adrian Sampson was good and the Cubs lost out on an opportunity, so the ninth went scoreless. Then the 10th came, da Jewels got knocked down and the Cubs lost.
Oh yeah, a Justin Steele debut! It was a few hours ago. While the Rockies are nowhere near where they are at home, they still have a roster full of guys who do particularly well against lefties. So it was a tougher game tonight for Steele than it looked. The savagery didn’t help, and while Steele had a lot of puffs, he also gave up too much hard contact (and a few walks). Efficiency is going to be the challenge for him because he’s just a batting pitcher. He’s at his best (right now) for strikeouts. But that comes with the risk of accounts where you didn’t get those early swings and failures, so you’re late, you have to get back into the zone, and sometimes you get hit hard (not to mention the efficiency / effectiveness). walking problems that it may present). I still love the locations and the makeup; it’s just still a TBD on whether he’s a starter or a high leverage / multi-stick lifter.
Nice to see Rowan Wick look like himself tonight. I felt like we hadn’t seen him since he left IL.
Full score out of the box.
