Firaxis, the team behind XCOM, now brings the world of Marvel to the tactical RPG front. During Gamescom’s opening night live, they announced Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a new game where you take control of Marvel’s greatest heroes, which will be released in March 2022.
The announcement comes with its own cinematic trailer, showing off some of the heroes who will join you in battle, including Dr. Strange, Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain America. Rather than act as a commander during humanity’s last breath at the XCOM, you are The Hunter, a character of your own creation who fights alongside the heroes against your mother and the Mother of Demons, Lilith. Per PC Gamer, your decisions matter as the story progresses, determining whether you steer the Midnight Suns down the path of good or evil.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns moves away from XCOM in the way he plays too. He’s supposed to have a much faster pace with a fight less dependent on chance. Gone are the days when soldiers would desperately shoot aliens to completely miss and seal their fate. Permadeath is also irrelevant and the missions are replayable, a change that better matches the feel of the Marvel Universe. That said, 2K teased Lilith’s ability to influence others, which means you may need to free some of the heroes from her grip in battle.
When you’re not battling with your Marvel favorites, you’ll be spending time in the Evolving Abbey, an explorable base of operations where you can chat with the various heroes. In an almost Anybody– Like fashion, you can bond with the heroes by joining social clubs with them or surprising them with a gift, because the power of friendship is so important when you fight the mother of demons. The Abbey will have plenty of secrets to uncover outside of being around Iron Man and Cap, and it even has a Hellhound to stroke!
An official gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns will be released on September 1, with the game slated to arrive in March 2022. For now, check out the trailer below:
