A rare private recording of John Coltrane playing his iconic work Supreme love comes out for the first time. Supreme Love: Living in Seattle arrives October 8 (via Impulse! / UMe). The ensemble was captured by saxophonist and educator Joe Brazil in 1965 on the last night of Coltrane’s work week at the Seattle Penthouse. The lineup included legendary musicians Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison and more. Supreme Love: Living in Seattle was restored and mastered by Kevin Reeves at East Iris Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. The recording is particularly remarkable as Coltrane rarely performed Supreme love in its entirety after its studio recording in 1964. For more than six decades, it was believed that the only recorded public performance of Supreme love was at a French festival in Juan-Les-Pains in July 1965. This version was released almost twenty years ago. Joe Brazil’s tape reels from the 1965 Seattle set have remained in his private collection until now.
Supreme Love: Living in Seattle was recorded with a two microphone setup on stage, connected to an Ampex reel machine. “What is remarkable is that tapes from this era often suffered over the years from damage from heat or humidity, or simply being stacked horizontally,” Engineer Kevin Reeves said in a Press release. “However, these tapes are in excellent condition, and the results are some of John Coltrane’s best amateur recordings that we have had the pleasure of working on.” The album contains sleeve notes written by music historian Ashley Kahn.
