The Giants were nine strikeouts from 40 of 0.500 games, but the reliever box couldn’t hold onto a lead as the Atlanta Braves rallied to hand San Francisco a tough 6-5 loss. at Truist Park Friday night.
Kevin Gausman made six tough innings and gave Tony Watson a 4-2 lead, but the veteran left-hander encountered immediate problems. After striking out Adam Duvall to start the set, Watson walked Joc Pederson and gave Guillermo Heredia a single. Ozzie Albies followed with an RBI brace and manager Gabe Kapler turned to right-hander Zack Littell to try and get rid of the jam.
Jorge Soler didn’t cooperate, throwing a three-run home run on the first pitch he saw from Littell.
The Giants (83-45), who have shown they never give up in games, got a point at the top of ninth on a Wilmer Flores solo homeroom, but that’s all they would get against the elder closest to San Francisco, Will Smith.
The Giants took an early 2-0 lead after Buster Posey hit a two-run homer in the first inning.
With two strikeouts in the ninth, Tommy La Stella looked to extend the game with deep training on the right, but Pederson made a great catch as he crashed into the wall to end it.
The Giants are used to being on the winning side with incredible endings this season, so this loss is going to sting a bit.
