Detroit Lions quarterback Tim Boyle was injured Friday night with just two possessions left. Boyle took a big hit on the game’s first possession, and although he completed this drive and the next, David Blough resumed the third offensive series of the night. Boyle went to the locker room with a trainer and came back with a brace on his right hand (throwing).
Boyle entered the game as a potential replacement for starter Jared Goff. He led the Lions on an impressive 14-game, 70-yard touchdown against the Colts in which he completed 6 of 7 passes for 41 yards and one score.
However, his backup job competitor David Blough put in a strong performance to end the half. Blough went 6-for-9 for 43 yards in the first half and led Detroit on their own touchdown practice, which included two impressive Blough scrums that extended the practice.
At this point, the severity of Boyle’s injury is unclear, but the Lions could be forced to keep three quarters on the 53-man roster and rely on Blough as a squad replacement heading into week one.
UPDATE: After the game, head coach Dan Campbell said the Lions need to do more testing on Boyle’s hand, but they may have to brace themselves for what time is running out.
