The Florida State's number-17 winning streak of 17 (21-6, 9-5 ACC) resulted in a 77-59 loss to 9th North Carolina (22-5, 12-2 ACC) in front of 21,520 fans at Dean Smith Center on Saturday.
The Seminoles struggled to drop the shots for most of the match. They shot only 30.5 on the field and 32.3 out of three during the match.
The Tar Heels prevented the FSU from going to the basket and forced the Seminoles to shoot 31 times. This is the largest number of FSU three-point attempts in a match this season
UNC took a good shot and really turned it on in the second half, shooting 48%. The Tar Heels finished shooting 42.6% of the field.
The Seminoles reduced the gap on UNC to five with 13:20 to play, but could not get closer.
UNC continued to increase its lead for a few minutes before bringing it up to 19.
Cameron Johnson and Nas Little, both of UNC, led the Tar Heels with 18 points each and Luke Maye added 15. Johnson also had 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Reserve guard David Nichols led the FSU with 16 points. Goalkeeper Terance Mann was the only other FSU double-digit player. He had 10 points to go with a team record of six assists and four rebounds.
Striker Mfiondu Kabengele – the top scorer of the USD entering the match – only played 19 minutes because of a serious disorder. He took just five shots and finished with eight points and six rebounds.
The Seminoles' eight-win series is the longest in the history of the program.
Starter is fighting
The starters of FSU were a combined total of 9 versus 33 in the match. When Mann is removed, it goes to 5-to-27. Mann made four of his six shot attempts, including a double of the three-point line.
Mr. J. Walker (0-7), Phil Cofer (1-6) and Trent Forrest (2-9) all struggled to find the back of the basket. The trio was a 0-9 combined from beyond the bow in the match.
Center Christ Koumadje had six points and had two of his five shots.
