After a four-game split at Oakland, a traditional home of horrors for the Yankees, the club ended a trip to the West Coast with a three-game set in Los Angeles. A series win over the Angels would send New York back to the Bronx with a winning record in that seven-game streak and continue the Yankees’ second-half push into the playoffs.
A familiar face takes the mound for the Yankees tonight, even though he hasn’t started for the club in months. Corey Kluber returns tonight, after more than three months of absence due to injury. For the season, Klubot posted a 3.04 ERA in 53.1 innings and is technically only one start in his magnum opus without a hitting against Texas. Kluber will almost certainly be on a pitching count tonight, so there’s a good chance the Yankees reliever box will have to push against the Angels.
For the Angels, right-hander Mike Mayers will be the first man to appear in what appears to be a reliever game. For the season, Mayers made 59 appearances. In them he pitched 59.2 innings to the tune of a 4.07 ERA. He hits a lot of guys (11.16 K / 9) and he gives up a lot of home runs (1.66 HR / 9). Hopefully the Yankees can give him a twisted number in the first inning and then adjust as needed to the flood of weapons they’re likely to see from Joe Maddon and the Angels.
August is almost over and I suspect that few people are more disappointed with this fact than Aaron Judge. The Yankees hitter had a monster August, his best month of the 2021 season in runs scored, doubles, homers, runs batted in, stolen bases, batting average, percentage on base, percentage on hitting and on base plus- percentage of hits. Heading into September, Judge currently sits sixth among AHL players in bWAR, eighth in batting average, second in OBP, eighth in SLG and third in OPS. If his September looks like his August (or even better, like his September 2017 … go get it), that will bode well for Judge and the baseball club.
It’s time to bounce back, Yankees. Let’s get back to ways of winning, and it starts tonight by beating the Angels.
