After Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch, CD Projekt has vowed to change the way it markets its games, including talking about games closer to launch. The company’s latest investor calls saw it keep that promise, as it refused to come up with dates for next-gen versions of Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3 – and didn’t even guarantee they wouldn’t be pushed back to 2022. if necessary.
Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 are both expected to receive further console upgrades in late 2021, something CD Projekt reconfirmed in its latest financial reports. During a live broadcast of first half 2021 results, an investor asked the company to be more specific on when these next-gen upgrades will arrive, or if they could be postponed until the next generation. next year.
Senior Vice President of Business Development Michał Nowakowski declined to answer questions, adding that this was part of CD Projekt’s new philosophy: “Our goal is to release the next generation version of [Cyberpunk 2077] late this year […] At the same time, bearing in mind the lessons we have learned over the past year, and considering that this project is still under development, we cannot say for sure that the timing of production will not change, of course.
“And with The Witcher 3, the situation is slightly different in that this is mainly addressed by the external team, which is Saber Interactive, the company we worked for. [with] before on Switch and also updates in the past. As with Cyberpunk 2077, our goal is to release this game still at the end of 2021. However, in the same way, [the] The development process is ongoing and we cannot be absolutely certain that the release schedule will not change. But for now, we’re definitely aiming for both titles by the end of 2021 and I don’t want to be more specific just yet. “
CD Projekt is clearly very careful about messaging when these new game releases arrive but, at least in Cyberpunk’s case, the company is working towards a specific date of 2021, not just creating the new version with no deadline. In a separate webcast, CEO Adam Kiciński explained:
“Following our promise to start communication closer to the real versions, we don’t want to say anything more about the next generation edition. [of Cyberpunk 2077] other than that it is scheduled for the second half of the year. Of course, we have a specific date in mind internally, but it’s too early to say anything about it. “
After a botched launch that continues to cost CD Projekt dearly, the company has repeatedly said it has learned huge lessons on how to approach game launches. have tentative signs that these lessons are being learned – hopefully leading to games arriving on promised dates and at a sufficient level of quality.
