Now that everyone knows that Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons wants out, there will be even more business rumors and business suggestions until one day the Sixers finally move the disgruntled star.
Philadelphia has had a high asking price for the All-Star three times, but now that Simmons has asked for a trade, the team isn’t much influence anymore. They’re going to have to move the 25-year-old for almost pennies on the dollar in order to avoid an embarrassing situation on the floor.
However, there may still be some hope. In a new business suggestion released by Bleacher Report, Simmons is transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a three-team deal that also includes the Portland Trail Blazers.
- Sixers get: Damian Lillard
- Grizzlies get: Ben Simmons, 2023 second-round pick (via PHI), 2023 second-round pick (via ATL, CHA or BRK, from PHI)
- Trail Blazers Get: Jaren Jackson Jr., Matisse Thybulle, Dillon Brooks, Jaden Springer, De’Anthony Melton, 2022 First Round Pick (via PHI), 2024 First Round Pick Swap (via PHI), first round 2026 (via PHI) and first round pick 2027 (via PHI)
B / R on Philadelphia’s role in the deal:
Saying all of this, it’s hard to build a bridge between the Blazers and the Sixers, assuming a simple Lillard-Simmons swap wouldn’t move the needle for Portland. This is where it gets funky, as the Grizzlies have fun as they land Simmons and help the Sixers provide the Blazers with a shipment of rebuilding tools.
Philadelphia would offload almost all of its assets into this exchange, but the payoff could be huge. Putting Lillard at the top of the list with Joel Embiid could give the Sixers their long-awaited path out of the Eastern Conference. Their actions together would be basketball magic, and both can call their own shots while the other takes a break or spots the ball.
At this point, a Lillard deal is probably not happening. The Trail Blazers aren’t making him available anytime soon, and the Sixers don’t have much time to wait for Lillard to actually request a trade like Simmons did. Philadelphia will need to end Lillard’s dream and they will almost have to settle for a deal with Simmons to avoid potential disaster to start the season.
