PlayStation finally announces a big summer showcase

Sony has announced PlayStation Showcase 2021, which will premiere on September 9 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific / 4:00 p.m. East / 9:00 p.m. UK (it’s September 10 at 6:00 a.m. AEST).

The event promises to offer a “glimpse into the future of the PS5, with updates from PlayStation studios and leading developers in the industry,” and will run for approximately 40 minutes. It will show the games coming out this holiday “and beyond”.

One thing you can count on not the PlayStation VR 2 (still officially untitled) is part of the show. The new headset and its next-gen controllers are expected to be due at the end of next year, and a PS blog post about the event makes it clear that it won’t be making a showcase appearance.

It has been a long wait for Sony to host a summer event. PlayStation was not part of E3 2021 and only had a limited presence at Gamescom this year. The company released an inventory in July, but did not include any projects from its major studios, which likely made them selected for this event.

However, the summer has not been calm for Sony. PlayStation bought Returnal developer Housemarque and PC port specialist Nixxes, and sold a lot of PS5s. It was also criticized for its handling of smaller games and turned around by shutting down PS3 and PS Vita stores.

Sony made no mention of specific games shown at the event, but the “vacation and beyond” timing of games at the event means we could very well see Horizon: Forbidden West (recently postponed to February 2022) and God of War Ragnarok (also postponed to 2022). More speculatively, we might hear from The Last of Us Part 2 standalone multiplayer, or maybe even the reported remake of the original Last of Us.
