Most of the time, in fact almost all the time, we tend to discuss the most expensive phones on the market. If it's not 600 dollars, it's 800 dollars, or 1099 dollars, or even 1980 dollars, as in the last ads. However, most smartphone sales are at the lower end of the scale, either the average or the budget line. Alcatel has launched its Series 1 devices, worth less than $ 100, last year. At the Mobile Congress, it opens today this price range with a large 5.5-inch IPS display.
For users who often use high-end smartphones, imagine what a $ 109 smartphone should have. A SoC A53 quad-core, almost no graphics, maybe 2GB of memory, a single camera and a certain fork of Android come with built-in ads? Perhaps then it is time to realign these expectations, starting with the Alcatel 1S.
This new smartphone is nice to hold and comes with a brushed aluminum back. Alcatel's parent company, TCL, is a well-known TV and panel maker that has perfected the art of inexpensive displays and equipped the Alcatel 1S with a 5.5-inch IPS display. Inside is the SoC Spreadtrum / UNISOC SC9863A, which even though it is written that Spreadtrum is actually an A55 octa-core chip running at 1.6-1.2 GHz, built on a process 28 nm.
The EMEA versions will support dual Nano SIM and the 3080 mAh battery is designed for 24 hours of talk time. The 1S will ship with Android 9.0 out of the box, and very rare for this price is a dual rear camera (13MP f / 2.0 + 2MP f / 2.8) that supports 90 fps slow motion and AI scene recognition ( nine scenes). This allows for hardware-based bokeh with both cameras, and AI can also be used to beautify the face on the 5MP selfie camera facing forward. One of the disadvantages of the device may be that the Wi-Fi is only 802.11n and the connection is micro-USB. We talked to TCL and said that at that price, they would rather spend money on memory / storage or display than on a C-type connection.
The 1s will be offered in a 3GB and 32GB DRAM configuration, but they will also support a microSD card with a capacity of up to 128GB in FAT32 mode. It also has a fingerprint sensor on the back and can support Face Key unlocking.
The Alcatel 1S will be available in the second quarter from 109 euros. It will be available in a black, blue, pink and gold brushed metallic finish.
Personally, the atmosphere of the unit is really nice and goes well beyond what I expected from a price at this price. The size of the screen is very impressive at this price, and having a core A55 greater than A53 should make it more vivid than other devices in this price category.
