The Rutgers coach, C. Vivian Stringer, who recorded his 1,000th win earlier this season, takes off the rest of the season in the opinion of doctors.
The Big Ten Conference School's announcement on Sunday comes three days after the 70-year-old Hall of Fame missed a game in Michigan.
Rutgers said Stringer should return for the playoffs. The Scarlet Knights (18-8, 10-5) were ranked earlier this month and are expected to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
Assistant coach Tim Eatman will act as interim coach at the Big Ten tournament.
"As you can imagine, it was not an easy decision, however, in consultation with my doctors, it is in my best interest to waste time getting healthy before resuming daily routine. coaches, "said Stringer in a statement.
"I know our girls can finish the season by playing Scarlet Knight basketball and I will join the team as soon as I can," she added.
Eatman was acting head coach for three games after the illness and death of Stringer's mother, Thelma Stoner, in 2016.
Rutgers still has three regular season games, starting with a home game against Wisconsin on Monday.
Stringer won his 1,000th victory on Nov. 13 with a 73-44 decision over Central Connecticut State.
She was the fifth female Division I coach to reach the milestone and sixth overall. She is the first African-American coach to reach the goal.
Others are Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, Tara VanDerveer and Sylvia Hatchell. Division II coach Barbara Stevens has also won more than 1,000 games.
Stringer has a career mark of 1015 to 410 in 48 seasons, making her the sixth most successful female basketball coach. She is 495-275 in 24 seasons at Rutgers.
Stringer is the only coach to have introduced three different teams to the finals: Cheney State in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers in 2000 and 07. Her teams have participated in 26 of the 36 NCAA tournaments and 10 regional finals.
Rutgers appeared for the last time in the NCAA tournament in 2015.
