British prodigy Phoebe Waller-Bridge has left the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”.
Several confirmed sources Variety that Waller-Bridge, best known for her indie TV hit “Fleabag,” left the project due to creative differences with fellow star and executive producer Donald Glover. According to those close to the project, Waller-Bridge’s departure is amicable and his role will be recast. The duo first worked together on “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.
Waller-Bridge is currently working on “Indiana Jones 5”, in which she stars, and on the final season of “Killing Eve”, of which she is the executive production. She is also credited as a writer on the latest Bond film, “No Time to Die”.
The series, based on Doug Liman’s feature film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is a co-production between New Regency and Amazon Prime Video. It was due to go into production next year.
The story of a married couple who find out they are spies hired to murder was first published in 2005, but somewhat overshadowed by the romance between the two protagonists.
Waller-Bridge was to star and produce the new series alongside Glover. The duo announced the project last year with a short, self-photographed Instagram clip in which Glover could be seen dancing as Waller-Bridge rose from her computer to pose in the doorway behind her, echoing the Jolie poses on the original movie poster.
The series was conceived by Glover, who remains on the series as creative co-producer and executive producer, and steps into the shoes of Brad Pitt in front of the camera, and Francesca Sloane (“Atlanta”), who remains on board. as a showrunner.
Sloane, Glover, and Waller-Bridge all have global deals on Amazon.
Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer of New Regency and Jenny Robins of Wells Street Films will be the executive producers.
