COVID-19 from chefs Tyrann Mathieu creates looming concern for week 1

When the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs face off in Week 1 of the 2021 season, many will call the game an AFC Championship preview. While it gets way too far ahead of ourselves, especially given the attrition that a 17-game regular season can have on teams, it’s exciting to think about it.

As reported earlier today, the Browns start their Week 1 workouts mostly healthy. With only backup offensive lineman Michael Dunn seated, Cleveland looks set to go for Week 1.

The Chiefs have faced a myriad of minor health concerns, like the Browns, but have a major concern looming over the safety of Tyrann Mathieu still in the COVID-19 protocol:

The optimism of the chefs is based on Mathieu’s vaccination status:

Mathieu was placed on the COVID-19 list on September 1, which means he has since suffered from symptoms. While Kansas City could get him back by Wednesday, he could still face limited star safety.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has struggled after returning from symptoms of COVID. Mathieu will have less than a week to regain football form and be ready for the powerful Cleveland offense that comes to town if he is allowed to return.
