Great Wall Motors has announced that it will be the next Chinese automaker to test the market in Europe by launching a compact, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) all-electric SUV in 2022. The company shared the news at IAA Mobility in Munich Today alongside plans to launch electric vehicles under its WEY brand and its existing ORA brand, both under the Great Wall umbrella.
Great Wall Motors is a Chinese automaker with nearly 40 years of automotive experience in its home country, in addition to other markets such as India and Russia. As you might have guessed, the brand takes its name from the Great Wall of China and remains one of the country’s largest SUV and pickup manufacturers.
As part of its global presence, Great Wall Motors has already entered certain European markets, including Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Serbia and the United Kingdom.
In 2017, Great Wall Motors launched its brand WEY, named after company founder Jack Wey. WEY is a luxury brand focused specifically on crossover SUVs. A year later, Great Wall launched ORA, focused on the future of mobility with electric vehicles.
With today’s announcement, Great Wall Motors is looking to bring two new plug-in electric vehicles to Europe under two of its current brands.
Great Wall Motors to bring new WEY and ORA models to Europe
In a report by Reuters at the IAA Mobility in Munich, Great Wall Motors (GWM) shared its plan to introduce two new electric vehicles to the automotive market in Europe under two different brands.
At the annual Munich auto show, Great Wall Motors announced that it will begin taking orders from German customers for its Coffee 01 hybrid SUV at the end of this year. Great Wall Motors went on to say that the Coffee 01 SUV will reach other markets in Europe, with official announcements to follow soon.
The SUV will debut under GWM’s WEY brand with a range of 150 km (~ 93 miles). Deliveries are expected to start in Europe in the first half of 2022.
In addition to WEY Coffee 01, Great Wall Motors shared plans to bring a compact BEV to Europe under its ORA brand. The Cat ORA will also reach Europe in 2022 and is expected to arrive with a range of 400 km (~ 249 miles).
Like the WEY Coffee 01, ORA’s Cat EV will begin orders before the end of the year. However, Great Wall Motors has yet to reveal which markets in Europe will see the BEV.
In addition, no pricing is yet available on either of the upcoming models. Come back with Electrek as we follow these two brands as Great Wall Motors seeks to expand its presence in Europe.
