A drone used to help search for a missing dog was shot dead by a man on Long Island Saturday in New York, police said.

The Suffolk County Police Department said Sunday in a press release that Gerard Chasteen, age 26, was charged with third-degree mischief and had banned the use of a weapon after firing on the drone in his yard.

The incident occurred around 4:45 pm. Members of Missing Angels-Long Island, an organization that was looking for missing animals, used a Mavic 2 Zoom drone to search for a missing dog.

The volunteer members lost contact with the drone, which costs more than $ 1,300, and the GPS placed it above Chasteen's home in Saint James, police said.
