The moment NXT leaves the boys to the men on their knees because that’s the end of the road. And girls to women too.
It is indeed the end of an era for the black and gold brand as it becomes much more colorful next week.
As always, check out Claire’s exceptional play and be sure to do it every Tuesday.
Let’s talk about NXT!
It is a party
Have you seen Bachelor party with Tom Hanks? Yeah, those bachelorette parties weren’t like that at all. On the one hand, it was the 1980s and a whole different world. Two, it’s still a family show. And finally, Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis deserve a party that is as weird and adorable as their love.
That says a lot about the work that NXT has put into these two characters and their relationship where these segments are a highlight of the series. Any wrestler will tell you, especially the older ones, that if you do your job as a character, the crowd will follow whatever you do in or out of the ring.
The last episode of an NXT era gave us an awkward bachelorette party filled with snark, liners, and people who weren’t even Indi’s friends. In typical ’80s rom-com fashion, Indi and Candice LeRae even pulled out of Indi’s party early on – how rude – to spy on the bachelorette party.
While we had some silly times with karts, ax throws, moon bounces, and laser beacons. everything was being built at one point. For weeks, Indi wanted Johnny Gargano to accept the love of his life. After last week’s cuss show, it felt like a postponed dream.
However, after a day of bonding, teamwork, and Dex helping Daddy Wrestling whenever possible, the two finally exchanged a high-five. Of course, Johnny bumped into it, but it was a great moment for everyone involved. Indi and Candice came out of their “hiding place” and the first was delighted that her fiancé had finally “cracked Johnny’s nut”.
Maybe their marriage won’t be a mess next week like almost every other marriage in wrestling marriage history. Maybe, just maybe, Johnny is finally ready to let his little girl run away with a man who made his way through his heart.
I have suspicions that Johnny is just waiting to explode and make it a forgetful day for the blushing bride. I really hope I am wrong.
MSK, all night x all day
MSK wanted Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan. NXT Tag Team Champions are on a mission for Respect, and they go after everyone for it. Lorcan and Burch wanted to get back what they thought was rightfully theirs. Like the women’s title match, this match was a clash of styles.
Lorcan and Burch had the early advantage of wielding raw power over the champions. Seriously, they’re big cats and MSK just can’t compete in this department. Nash Carter was lost in the early onslaught of submissions, dropkicks, uppercuts and suplexes.
In fact, Carter was hit the hardest in the main event, as it became clear that we are seeing the story of a team surpassed in size but not in heart.
The climax of the match came when Carter went on the third rope too many times and grabbed a few knees in the back on the way down.
Lorcan slapped him an ankelock in the middle of the ring, while Burch crucified Lee just as Lee went to save his partner. That was it, wasn’t it? Carter was a prime target the entire game and there was no way to save him.
Not so fast. Carter found a way to not only break the hold, but also throw Lorcan with just enough force to break the crossface and save his partner.
It’s the little things, you know?
In the end, Lorcan and Burch just didn’t have the will, and MSK scored the pin with their trademark tandem attack.
When do champions stop fighting for respect? I’m not sure, but after every win we are told to ‘show respect to the name of MSK’. Who doesn’t respect these cats at this point? I like the story of their reign but he has to find another gear after successive victories over big and bad opponents
Speaking of which, Pete Dunne and the man with the best hat in the business, Ridge Holland, weren’t too happy about the loss. They added insult to injury and issued Lorcan and Burch with their marching papers in the form of a beating. One feud ends, another begins, as Dunne and Holland clearly see these two as the weak links in the chain.
Bad friends, good partners
Can a relationship of convenience reverse a true friendship? That’s the main question before the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship game. Kacy Catanzaro x Kayden Carter are friends to the end. They even went to Indi’s bachelorette party together! Io Sharai x Zoey Stark? Yes, they’re clearly just business partners, despite how much Zoey wants this to change.
Zoey and Io must not only defend their titles, but prove that their trade deal has long-term potential. Meanwhile, the challengers, after months of hard and demanding work, must prove that they are truly ready to say, “The champions are here!
I guess friendship is overrated. There’s a moment that crystallizes this match: Zoey inadvertently knocks her partner off the ring apron. At this point, Kayden has momentum! She pulls an inverted STO out of her bag of tricks and wins the match. That’s it. It’s over. Good night everybody!
But about 9 minutes into the game she was dreaming of, Kayden hesitates. The CWC shouts at him to pin Zoey and take the gold. But she can’t do it without her best friend. She finally gets up after wasting all that time, tags Kacy, and they hit a team electric chair from the top rope. The match is over, right? Nope.
Io rallied around all this wasted time, interrupted the pinning attempt, and effectively stole the momentum from the challengers.
Zoey marks Io, who hits a magnificent moon jump from the third string, and the Champions hold on.
I must feel bad for the Kacy’s and Kayden’s. And I really do! They had the gold in hand but showed they just weren’t ready to win. It’s a sports cliché term, but that doesn’t make it any less true. No matter how good a team is or how friendly they are, it is nothing compared to the experience of champions, especially Io Sharai.
To make matters worse, Kacy and Kayden got blown up by Batman disguised as Mandy Rose, Gigi Dolin, and Jacy Jayne. I thought they would go after Sarray for “disfiguring” Mandy, but Gigi and Jacy remember being embarrassed by these two a few weeks ago. Who knows what’s next for the tag champions, but NXT’s resident social media queens have their hands full of violence.
Bad moon rising
Last week Kay Lee Ray coached Ember Moon in a match. Ray said the former NXT Woman champion is a thing of the past and Ray is the future. Like any competitor in any sport, the idea of someone calling you one has been Ember’s shoes and she’s been a challenge.
Again, exactly what Kay wanted.
The two engaged in a scientific brawl, targeting body parts and issuing submissions. The kind of thing you do when you want to humiliate your opponent and make him cry aunt. Ember wanted to prove that she is still the competitor she claims to be, while Kay wanted to overthrow a legend and prove that she belongs.
Neither of them wanted to submit, nor give in to a three-way account. Ember, even after having his shoulder dissected for most of the game, refused to slap and give Kay satisfaction.
In the end, it was Ember’s frustration that won the day. She put Ray in a Michinoku pilot over the shoulder, but even after suffering a movement that seemed to hurt a lot, Ray refused to stay on the ground. Ember lost focus for a moment to let out a cry of anguish, offering Kay an opening to drop a KLR bomb.
1-2-3.
Great opening game with a lot of pride at stake, and a lot to win or lose for the two women. Kay Lee Ray walks forward with a huge gash in his belt, while Ember is now a bit adrift.
Her tag partner is gone, she’s on a serious losing streak, and like she said, something needs to change. I like it. Quickly following up on a story the commentators were telling and gives us something else to look forward to during next week’s “rebranding”.
The winner and loser of a match must have a destination after the match. NXT has accomplished this several times tonight, and is supporting them to do so.
Extracurricular activities
Four-way fatal explanations
LA Knight, Kyle O’Reilly, Pete Dunne and Tommaso Ciampa will face off next week in a Fatal 4-Way to determine the number one contender for the NXT Championship. Knight, O’Reilly and Ciampa cut promos detailing their motivations, O’Reilly being the best of the bunch for my money. We get some next week and a marriage? I don’t know what to be most excited for.
Escobar’s season is back
It was about finding the right result that didn’t hurt any man and NXT did. Carmelo Hayes has shown he can hang out with Santos Escobar but like me in math class, the numbers weren’t in his favor. Legado del Fantasma intervened and shenanigans ensued. Escobar gets the W he needs, Lopez looks good in defeat since the bad guys cheated, and Elektra Lopez has shown her worth and power.
Hit Row with an attitude
It was simple. Hit Row wants revenge on Legado del Fantasma for what happened last week. NXT is obviously saving something for next week as it makes perfect sense for them to get revenge on this episode. Each member expressed their peace, with B-FAB letting Elektra Lopez know that she had started something she wouldn’t have the chance to complete. A hard head indeed makes a soft ass.
As much as I enjoy this quarrel, I also feel like it is blocked. Hopefully Ms Lopez changes things up and that means a match between her and B-FAB is in the near future.
Large opening Large closing
Chuckie Viola and Paxton Averill were fed with the new members of the diamond mine, the Creed Brothers. Brutus and Julius ended the match before commentators sweated calling it out.
It was quick
Mei Ying wanted to send a message to Boa. Taking out Virginia Ferry (I get it!), The poor woman who didn’t even get an entrance, in a dominant fashion is one way to do it.
It’s the end, but maybe not quite. NXT will be different next week, but it probably will be to feel the same in his attention to detail and character development. As long as that doesn’t change, there is nothing to worry about.
Law? Next week we’ll have a Wedding, Fatal 4-Way, and NXT Women’s Title Game between Raquel González and Franky Monet. Oh, and lots of bright colors.
