The suicide bombing on August 26 came as U.S. military personnel were providing security as people attempted to flee the country amid the U.S. withdrawal and Taliban takeover.

Eleven Marines, a Navy sailor and an Army soldier were among the dead, while 18 other U.S. service members were injured. The attack also claimed the lives of more than 160 Afghans.

Ten of the victims – nine Marines and one Navy member – were based at Camp Pendleton in California.
